Wall-E

July 2nd, 2008 Posted in Entertainment

The first line of A.O. Scott’s review of Wall-E for the NY Times;

The first 40 minutes or so of “Wall-E” — in which barely any dialogue is spoken, and almost no human figures appear on screen — is a cinematic poem of such wit and beauty that its darker implications may take a while to sink in.

I haven’t read past that since I’ve yet to see the film (might take my kids this weekend) but even that one sentence gives me hope it’s worth seeing. From earlier previews and whatnot I’d gathered that this wasn’t just a sugar-sweet tale of a cute lil’ robot but that it was also a commentary on the human condition, and where it’s going.

Now admittedly you can’t take i much away from it, it’s an animated Pixar film intended as entertainment above all else. Still, if it entertains and gives a reason for people to stop and think… so much the better.

Pixar films tend to have layers to them like that, if you look for them. Here’s hoping Wall-E is like that too.
